Dear Parent/Guardian:

Your child will be taking the reading comprehension section of the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test on December 12, 2006. This portion of the test takes 50 minutes.

The SDRT is a diagnostic test, not a mastery test. The results of the test will identify those students who will be required to take a Content Literacy course in ninth grade.  This course will focus specifically on the reading and written response skills necessary for high school level classes. It will also better prepare students for the Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum section of the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT).  Furthermore, it will develop the advanced literacy skills necessary for college, career, and personal growth.

Any student who scores below the 40%-ile on the SDRT test of comprehension will be enrolled in the Content Literacy Course. You will be contacted by mail if your child will be enrolled in this reading course.

Because the No Child Left Behind laws require measurements such as CAPT as part of the graduation requirements, we want to ensure that all Amity students are prepared to take the CAPT.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the middle school Reading Center at 392-2130.

Sincerely,

Jennifer C. Bshara
Reading Consultant
